The Louisiana Department of Health is holding several mass vaccination events across the state for those currently eligible to be vaccinated. State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter said they have partnered with various agencies and churches to reach as many as possible, especially those with access to care issues.
“From the very, very big like the convention center in New Orleans to smaller community events that are in a church or another location. The goal here is to try to reach people where they are and reduce people’s barriers,” said Kanter.
Kanter said they are using the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, which is one dose. He said this vaccine does not require deep cold storage making it ideal for large events and compared to the other vaccines in use it’s just as effective.
“After a few weeks out, zero people who got vaccinated in this trial were hospitalized with COVID and zero died of COVID. So, an extraordinarily effective vaccine,” said Kanter
The J & J vaccine is most effective against COIVD, 28 days after your shot.
Kanter said the J & J clinical trial had more participants and was tested in more countries than the other vaccines.
Like the other two vaccines, Kanter said to refrain from taking a pain reliever before you are vaccinated to get the best immune response.
“I wouldn’t take it before. What we’re trying to do is induce an immune response. We’re trying to have your body ramp up its own antibody production like it would as if you’re getting infected with the real thing,” said Kanter.
Kanter said after your injection if side effects become too bothersome to take Tylenol but try not to if possible.
