State Police is investigating a fatal police shooting in Abbeville Wednesday afternoon that also resulted in a deputy getting shot. Trooper Thomas Gossen says a Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s deputy attempted to serve an order of protective custody at a home when the deputy and police officers were shot at by 41-year-old Dwight Brown who was armed with a rifle
“As the subject stood in the roadway aiming the rifle and firing the rifle at the deputy and the officers, the deputy did return fire and fatally wounded the suspect,” said Gossen.
Gossen says the deputy who shot the Brown, was also shot.
“So the deputy was transported to a local hospital for treatment and has since been released,” said Gossen.
Neighbors of the man who was fatally shot told KATC-TV that Brown was a veteran who suffered from PTSD. Gossen says an order of protective custody is usually associated with a mental evaluation.
“We know from witnesses on the scene and other people that were familiar with the subject that were some issues, a lot of people spoke about possible PTSD, but there’s no real way to confirm that without that report,” said Gossen.
