Irish bars in New Orleans agreed to close today on St. Patrick’s Day out of concern for patron’s safety.
Owner of Finn McCool’s Sean Kennedy says he made the decision for his pub after witnessing a group on Saturday flagrantly violating COVID guidelines. He said that made the risks for today clear.
“I just saw too many people very uncomfortable Saturday, not in terms of a large group, but a group that was not following the rules,” said Kennedy.
Kennedy said when those patrons who were violating COVID rules were asked to correct their behavior they not only refused but argued with staff.
“People were just being belligerent not just to the staff but to myself as well. Where we were trying to plead to their better nature people were choosing not to,” said Kennedy.
Kennedy said staying closed on one of the biggest days of the year for Irish bars is tough but it’s the right thing to do.
“We are almost there right? So why would we want to jeopardize that by having 20 or 30 people getting infected today?” said Kennedy. “It doesn’t make any sense to me, it’s morally wrong.”
