There was a nine percent drop in the total number of abortions performed in Louisiana from 2019 to 2020 according to the Louisiana Department of Health.
Louisiana Right to Life Executive Director Ben Clapper says this puts the state’s abortion rate at a 12-year low.
“We see this as a part of a trend, since 2014 there has been a 27 percent drop in abortions,” said Clapper.
Clapper said there’s a number of reasons why the number of abortions has declined.
“I think it is a combination of a culture shift, more services available to women who find themselves pregnant and not know what to do, it’s about the policies enacted at the State Legislature,” said Clapper.
Planned Parenthood argues the decrease is largely driven by increased access to contraception.
Clapper hoped next year the number will decline further.
“Certainly we know that there were still 7,488 (abortions in 2020). Too many abortions and we need to make a change in our society and save these children,” said Clapper.
