The list of candidates to become the next president at LSU is narrowed down to eight from 23 applicants. Two familiar names among the eight are University of Louisiana System President Dr. Jim Henderson and Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne. Governor John Bel Edwards said it’s imperative the right candidate is chosen.
“But it just seems much more important right now that we get the strongest possible president for the LSU system that we can get, given the challenges that the institution is having,” said Edwards.
Edwards said the ideal candidate needs to have the qualities to oversee not just the Baton Rouge campus but also serve as Chancellor of the A & M system.
“A proven leader and someone who’s been in the higher education field for a number of years dealing with things like Title IX issues, dealing with funding issues.
Edwards said it’s a huge job overseeing an ag center, a law school, Pennington Biomedical Research, two medical schools a two-year campus in Eunice, and really a statewide footprint.
“And hopefully we can find a very strong leader who’s got a lot of experience dealing with state government, dealing with higher education and I’m optimistic we’re going to do that,” said Edwards.
The search committee plans to live stream interviews with the eight semifinalists Monday and Tuesday.
