There’s legislation in Congress waiting to be discussed that would dedicate 16-million dollars a year to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries that will help the agency’s efforts to protect endangered species and habitats.
LDWF Biologist Director Amity Bass on the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act.
“We have over 360 species that are in are need of immediate conservation because we found they are precipitously declining,” said Bass.
The Louisiana Pearlshell (mussel), the Louisiana Pinesnake and Alligator Snapping Turtle, Frosted Elfin (butterfly), and Black Rail (bird) are among the species at risk in Louisiana.
The 16-million dollars would go to the Louisiana Wildlife Action Plan, which was implemented in 2005, but its efforts have been limited, because of inadequate funding.
“We want to be able to proactive but you have to have funding to be able to address that, so this is something that will be great not only for Louisiana but nationally,’ said Bass.
