An over two-year rehabilitation Mississippi River Bridge project on Interstate 20 is now complete. Department of Transportation Spokesperson Erin Buchanan said the bridge in Madison Parish was built about 50 years ago and like any interstate corridor, it is well-traveled.
“You’ll notice that the driving surface on the bridge deck is much improved with a concrete overlay on that in addition to multiple repairs on the steel structure itself,” said Buchanan.
The $30-million-dollar project began in January of 2019 and is one of the few interstate river crossings in the state. Buchannan said the repairs were paid for with both state and federal dollars.
“We take advantage of every federal dollar that’s available to us and put that towards prioritizing all of our projects all across the state so absolutely a combination of both,” said Buchannan.
Buchanan said in addition to resurfacing the structure, there were also corroded bolts and other components of the bridge that were replaced.
“The structure as far as the finger joints and bolts on the bridge that allow it to expand and contract and so it’s kind of brought up to modernized standards as far as those goes,”
The bridge also received modernizations with new LED lighting, cameras, and radar that are integrated into Mississippi’s IT network.
