Monroe Police continue to investigate Friday night’s fatal shooting of former Richwood High starting quarterback Michael Sherman. Detectives say Sherman was gunned down after an argument involving two females. Richwood High Football Coach Marcus Yanez says Sherman was a great person to be around.
“He was the energy of the team, he was the heartbeat of the team, he was just a fun-loving kid, his smile could light up any room that he walked into,” said Yanez.
Sherman graduated in May and no arrests have been made.
After learning of Sherman’s death, Yanez held a team meeting, with players, coaches, students, and the community. But he says less than an hour after that meeting, two more of his former players were shot in a drive-by shooting.
“Just finally get all of those emotions out, you get the news that two more of your players have been shot, luckily they are doing ok,” said Yanez.
The Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s office says 18-year-old Xavier Wright remains in stable condition, while the second victim is a juvenile and can not be identified. He was treated and released at the hospital.
Three teenagers were shot in Monroe since Friday and no arrests have been made. Yanez is joining other community leaders in calling for the violence to stop.
“Unfortunately, this has been an ongoing situation in Monroe, it just so happens that this weekend it involves three of my kids,” said Yanez.
