The state health department reported 5,388 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, the third-highest daily count since the pandemic started. The last time the state reported five-thousand plus cases was in January when the vaccine was only available to the state’s most vulnerable population.
Currently, anyone over the age of 12 is eligible for the vaccine, but according to the state health department, people under the age of 50 make up 76% of all new COVID cases and 17% of new cases are in people younger than 17.
The number of COVID-19 hospital patients also continues to rise. It now stands 844, the highest it’s been since mid-February.
