A Republican leader in Congress says it’s up to the Biden administration to get the ball rolling on passing hurricane recovery aid for southwest Louisiana. House Minority Whip Steve Scalise said he understands the frustration felt by Hurricane Laura and Delta victims in southwest Louisiana who need assistance to rebuild homes and businesses.
“We’ve been calling on the Biden administration to send that supplemental request. That’s where it has to start for the Federal Government to send down the formal request,” Scalise said.
Governor John Bel Edwards has told the White House three billion dollars in hurricane recovery dollars are needed. Scalise said the White House knows what must be done, they need to ask Congress to approve the funding.
“They’ve done their assessments, it’s a long time passed for doing the bean-counting. It’s time to actually put the request in and get the money to the people of Lake Charles,” Scalise said.
Scalise said he would like a face-to-face meeting with the Biden administration officials to discuss the great need for community development block grant money in southwest Louisiana.
“He doesn’t care if you voted for him or against him if you’re a Republican or a Democrat he’s going to work with everybody, he’s going to unite the country, and the fact that you’ve gone now seven months where the president of the United States hasn’t met with the leadership of one of the two parties in Congress, it’s unprecedented,” Scalise said.
