The Louisiana Department of Revenue is about to turn over more than $10 million to Unclaimed Property. Department of Revenue Spokesperson Byron Henderson said it’s money that was issued by paper checks for tax refunds, from July of 2019 to June of 2020, that have gone uncashed.
“If they are not claimed by September 15th, then the Department of Revenue is required by law to transfer those funds to the Unclaimed Property Division,” said Henderson.
Henderson said the department has sent out 13-thousand letters notifying individuals and businesses of the uncashed checks.
“Letting them know that they can claim their refunds from us before those funds are transferred. All they have to do is complete the voucher that accompanies the letter,” said Henderson.
Henderson said if the voucher is returned before September 15th, they will issue a replacement check.
If for some reason you don’t use the voucher process for a replacement check before the mid-September deadline Henderson said, you’ll need to go through another process to receive the funds.
“It’s still your money but instead of claiming it from us you just have to claim it from Unclaimed Property,” said Henderson.
