Jameis Winston made a strong case that he should be the starting quarterback for the Saints, in Monday night’s preseason win over Jacksonville. Winston threw for 123 yards and two touchdowns and just one incompletion on ten attempts. Coach Sean Payton is not providing a timeline on when he’ll announce a starter.
“When we know which direction we are going, we’ll let you guys know, we are not going to try to anticipate, saying hey it’s going to be midweek or next week,” said Payton.
Winston’s competition for starting Q-B, Taysom Hill, was 11 of 20 for 138 yards and a touchdown.
Second-year wide receiver Marquez Callaway also had a big game in front of a national TV audience. The former Tennessee standout had five grabs for 104 yards. Callaway caught two touchdown passes including a spectacular one-handed grab. Callaway says he was just doing his job.
“Coaches put us in the best situation where we think we can make a play and that’s exactly what happened, coach called the plays, Jameis executed and put the ball where it was supposed to be,” said Callaway.
The Saints final preseason game is Saturday when New Orleans hosts the Arizona Cardinals.
