The voting experience will be back to normal when Louisianans head to the polls for the fall elections on October 9 and November 13.
Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin said the circumstances are completely different than they were last year and it’s time we get back to regular elections.
“Now that vaccines are regularly available they can take a vaccine, they can mask up, or they can do both,” said Ardoin who added that this will be the second election under “normal circumstances”, the first being a special election for a State Senate seat back in July that was held in New Orleans.
Ardoin said this election will not feature the expanded early voting opportunities seen last year during the pandemic. Ardoin says that policy was costly and resulted in the loss of some elections commissioners.
“We need continuity in that process so we are going to go back to our normal voting processes that we have in the past, and I think that things are going to work out,” said Ardoin who mentioned that masking will not be a requirement to cast a ballot.
Most voters will primarily be deciding on a slate of constitutional amendments related to tax reform. New Orleans residents will be deciding on parish-level elections.
The deadline to register to vote in this election is September 8th. Early voting runs from September 25th through October 2nd every day except Sundays from 8:30 AM to 6 PM.
