Coastal parishes of southeast Louisiana are reporting catastrophic damage from Hurricane Ida. Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s office Captain Brennan Matherne says he rode out the storm in Galliano and experienced Ida’s wrath for several hours. He said the eye of the storm crossed over the town of Lockport.
“And the images we saw while people got out during the eye to survey the damage (were) catastrophic. Just as bad as here in the southern area,” Matherne said.
Matherne said the good news is that their levee systems held up to the storm.
By in large the floodwaters, which we were concerned about, were not the biggest factor but there is just catastrophic wind damage from top to bottom in Lafourche parish,” Matherne said.
Matherne said Ida was worst for Lafourche than hurricanes Betsy, Gustav, and Katrina.
“We’re all a bit nervous going out there today because we’re going to see things we’ve never seen before,” Matherne said.
