Power to the people is still slow to come for a lot of folks in Lafourche Parish. That’s the word this morning from Sheriff’s Captain Brennen Matherne. He says the parish is on “day 10 without power since Ida and communications have been spotty at best.” He says some of the major cell phone carriers have not had great reception throughout the parish.
Matherne says that low water pressure has been also a problem outside the Thibodaux area but most of that has been corrected. He says it shows some of the major complications that we’re having “when you don’t know if you’re even going to have running water when you turn on your faucet in the evening.”
There has been some lawlessness in Lafourche, as is to be expected during a disaster situation. Matherne notes there have been several looting arrests and nearly 50 others on other charges including curfew violations. Contractor fraud is another problem that the parish is dealing with. He says there’s been a lot of people descending on Lafourche Parish trying to make a quick buck, although there are quite a few legitimate companies working to help residents get their lives back in order and their homes rebuilt. If you suspect contractor fraud you can report it to a hotline number 985-413-4498.
