Southwest Louisiana Congressman Clay Higgins is explaining why he and other Republican members of Louisiana’s Congressional delegation voted against a bill that would provide Louisiana with much-needed disaster relief assistance. Higgins says the legislation would also raise the federal debt ceiling by another 15 trillion dollars.
“It’s already at 28.5 trillion and they (Democrats) want 45-trillion, it’s insane,” said Higgins.
The disaster relief assistance is contained in a continuing resolution that would keep the federal government operating for a few months beyond September 30th.
“I don’t have a problem supporting a short-term CR, I don’t like it, but I have voted for them in the past, and I would here too, but I definitely would not vote to increase the debt limit,” said Higgins.
Higgins is also not impressed with the amount of disaster assistance funding that would go to Louisiana.
“They are talking about 1.6 billion for the entire nation, all the declared disaster for 2020 that’s not enough southwest parishes of Louisiana,” said Higgins.
Higgins remains confident Congress will pass legislation that will contain hurricane recovery dollars for southwest Louisiana, but the current spending bill under consideration in the Senate, will need to be amended before it can get Congressional approval.
