The Louisiana Department of Health is confirming a COVID-19 outbreak connected to a recent wedding in Abbeville. The Department considers all attendees of this wedding to be exposed to COVID-19 and encourages all attendees to take public health precautions. The wedding was held at L’Eglise on September 25, 2021. Approximately 150 people were in attendance. Several people that attended the wedding subsequently developed symptoms and tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19.
Dr. Tina Stefanski, medical director for Region 4 of the Office Public Health says efforts have been undertaken to contact all of the attendees to notify them “that they were potentially exposed to COVID so that they could stay home and very importantly get tested.”
Dr. Stefanski says there is concern that wedding attendees could further spread what has been an all too often deadly virus. She says, “cause we certainly don’t want us to see ongoing exposures as a result of this so this is just simply a notification to make sure that people stay home, get tested.”
According to Dr. Stefanski, the best way to protect yourself against Covid-19 in group gatherings like the Abbeville wedding is to get vaccinated, especially if you are elderly or have underlying health conditions. “If you are eligible for a booster, especially those individuals who are 65 and older or 55 and older with underlying health problems get your booster,” says Stefanski.
