UPDATE: Lafayette Police have made an arrest in the Wednesday night shooting death that took place in the 100-block of Essie Street. The suspect has been identified as 53-year-old Brian Keith Babineaux of Lafayette. Babineaux is charged with 2nd Degree Murder and was transported to the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center for booking.
After responding to a residence for a medical emergency Wednesday night police found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound. Lafayette Corporal Bridgette Dugas says they are now investigating a homicide at an Essie Street home.
“According to a witness the victim did respond to a knock at the door, and when the victim arrived at the door, they did hear one gunshot and eventually located the victim suffering from a gunshot wound,” said Dugas.
The gunshot victim was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead, and police say she was only shot once.
“What we know of only one shot was fired in the direction of the victim and she was struck, and it was fatal and we are looking to identify the shooter,” said Dugas.
Dugas says the shooting happened shortly after 9 pm Wednesday night in the 100 block of Essie Street. She says the area is not known for high crime and they are asking anyone who might have seen something out of the ordinary to contact them.
“Anyone with information that may have seen someone in the area walking down the road, anything that was suspicious or anyone that in the area around the time where this incident occurred, we ask them to Lafayette police or crime stoppers,” said Dugas.
The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Witnesses can upload any pictures or video evidence pertaining to the case right from their smartphone or computer.
