Governor John Bel Edwards says he supports the first two constitutional amendments on the November 13th ballot. Amendment One would authorize a centralized state tax collecting authority.
“It is something I support, there was a big effort to reach out to parishes and municipalities in order to get their support for this,” said Edwards.
Edwards says he also supports Amendment two which would lower the state’s income tax rate, but do away with the ability to deduct federal income taxes paid.
“With respect to income tax, both personal and business income taxes, I do think it’s important that we do what we can to trade exemptions for lower rates and that’s what this does,” said Edwards.
The governor says under the current tax structure, the federal government – in effect – determines how much tax Louisianans pay.
“We need to be in control of that ourselves, this is a revenue-neutral way to accomplish that and it will have less volatility in Louisiana,” said Edwards.
Early voting for the November 13th election starts this Saturday. Many voting districts will only have the amendments on their ballot. The Governor did not comment on Amendments 3 or 4.
