Governor Edwards is headed to the Scottish Lowlands today to take part in the International Climate Change Summit in Glasgow. Edwards said there’s no other state in the United States more impacted by climate change than Louisiana.
“But it’s also true that there’s no state better positioned to be part of the solution and to benefit more from new policies that move us towards a reduced carbon footprint,” said Edwards.
Edwards will attend meetings at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference beginning Sunday until November 4th, along with advisors and members of his Climate Initiatives Task Force.
“But I also see this as a tremendous opportunity for the State of Louisiana. And that’s why I’ll be going along with members of the Department of Natural Resources, LED (Louisiana Economic Development), and CPRA (Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority),” said Edwards.
Last year Edwards signed an executive order last year launching a Climate Change Initiatives Task Force to create policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by net zero in 2050. Edwards said he wants the state to learn more about and take advantage of new technology aimed at reducing our carbon footprint.
“But also, to make sure that investment happens here, economic development happens here in Louisiana and those jobs get created here as well,” said Edwards.
The Race to Zero campaign is part of a global effort of thousands of governments, higher education institutions, and businesses working to stop the worsening effects of climate change.
