FEMA is extending its deadline for Hurricane Ida individual assistance. Folks in the 25-parish disaster declaration area now have until November 29th to apply for help from the federal agency. FEMA’s Nate Custer says the extension was requested by the governor’s office because of possible communication issues.
“Maybe not everyone had received the word that you had to register with FEMA to be considered for assistance,” said Custer.
Custer says more than a half-million applications for Ida assistance have been approved so far at a price tag of 889 million dollars.
Custer says the FEMA funding can help with rental assistance, temporary housing and home repairs not covered by insurance.
“We try to make the home safe, secure and functional so that people who’ve been displaced because of some damage to their dwelling can move back in,” said Custer.
Custer says the FEMA assistance can help to get one’s home back to a livable condition until major repairs are completed.
“I think people are going to feel more comfortable being at their home rather than wondering what may be going on with some kind of repairs or whatever and they’re not able to keep an eye on it,” said Custer
To apply for FEMA assistance visit DisasterAssistance.gov or phone 1-800-621-3362. Again, the extended deadline to apply for FEMA assistance is now November 29th.
