LSU introduced Brian Kelly as its new head football coach today. Kelly has spent the last 12 years at Notre Dame and LSU fans have only been able to watch his work from afar as Kelly has coached his whole life in the Midwest. LSU athletics director Scott Woodward expects Tiger Nation will love him, because he wins.
“I know LSU fans will love Brian Kelly, success follows him wherever he goes, all he does is win,” said Woodward.
When you combine Kelly’s victories in Division one and two, he has more wins than any active coach in major college football. A record of 284-97-2.
Kelly says one of the reasons why he took the LSU job is that he admires athletics director Scott Woodward’s desire to be excellent in everything.
“Excellence in academics, excellence in academics in athletics here at LSU and seeing that, feeling and knowing we can go off together and fulfill that goal,” said Kelly.
Kelly says he’s looking forward to leading LSU in the toughest college football conference in the country.
“I want to be under the bright lights, I want to be on the Broadway Stage that’s what my passion is,” said Kelly.
Kelly says he’s looking forward to his first experience in Tiger Stadium, but he understands the fans are expecting a winner.
“I want the fans here early, tailgating and having a great time, filling the stadium, being enthusiastic, but you got to put a great product on the field too, so my job is to put an exciting winning football team on the field,” said Kelly.
Kelly says he has not made any firm decisions on his staff, but his two coordinators at Notre Dame are not following him to Baton Rouge. Irish offensive coordinator Tommy Rees is staying in South Bend and defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman is reportedly replacing Kelly as Notre Dame’s head coach.
