LSU Quarterback Max Johnson announces he’s entering the transfer portal after spending two seasons with the Purple and Gold. Johnson’s decision comes as a surprise after starting 11 games this past season. Assistant Tiger Rag Editor William Weathers says Johnson’s decision means Garrett Nussmeier will likely start the bowl game.
“Garrett Nussmeier who was going to redshirt, is going to have to start and lose that redshirt and be backed up by a walk-on,” said Weathers.
It’s unknown how new head football coach Brian Kelly feels about this. Tiger Rag Editor Ron Higgins is surprised Johnson didn’t at least go through a spring practice to get a feel for the new coaching staff. Also, Johnson’s younger brother, one of the top tight ends in the country, Jake Johnson, announced he’s de-committing from LSU. Both are the sons of former Super Bowl winning quarterback Brad Johnson.
“I don’t know if there is something personal between the Johnsons’ and Brad Kelly from the past that didn’t work that they don’t like each other, that’s assuming a lot, but it just looks funny on the surface,” said Higgins.
Johnson’s departure leaves LSU with just one scholarship quarterback on the roster, Garrett Nussmeier, who was not supposed to play anymore this season to preserve his redshirt. Four-star recruit Walker Howard is expected to sign with LSU next week. The St. Thomas More QB would not be eligible to play in the bowl game.
Weathers says maybe former starter Myles Brennan who entered the transfer portal last month, comes back.
“With Brennan having way more experience than any of those guys, maybe he connects with the new offensive coordinator philosophically,” said Weathers.
It’s sill unknown who will be LSU’s next offensive coordinator. All we know is Frank Wilson is the new Associate Head Coach.
