State police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Jackson Parish. Trooper Michael Reichardt said the sheriff’s office received a call Saturday afternoon that 63-year-old Michael Dobbins broke into a Chatham residence assaulted one person and then fled the scene. But hours later he was found behind some abandoned cars.
“He confronted the deputies and pointed a weapon at them. The officers did give loud verbal commands for him to drop the weapon, at which time he refused their commands. And officers fired their weapons at Dobbins, striking him several times, and he was pronounced dead at the scene,” said Reichardt.
Reichardt said it was a long day for sheriff’s deputies, he said before they received a call that Dobbins was in a residence assaulting one person and threatening to kill another, they believe Dobbins broke into a vehicle and stole a gun.
“And then actually, fired at some passing vehicles earlier that day too, after the burglary. So, it was a hairy situation there for a little while,” said Reichardt.
Reichardt said considering all the incidents Dobbins was allegedly involved in Saturday they are thankful no one else was severely injured in the shootout.
“Thank goodness no law enforcement or anybody else was injured. That’s part of our job unfortunately and we’re just thankful nobody else was hurt,” said Reichardt.
The incident remains under investigation.
