New CDC guidance for those who received their two doses of the Pfizer vaccine, you are now encouraged to be boosted at five months out from your last dose, instead of six months. State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter said boosters are vital with the highly contagious Omicron variant.
“So, if you’ve had Pfizer, if you’re five months out from finishing that primary two-dose series you’re now recommended to get a booster dose and the booster dose is so very important with Omicron,” said Kanter.
The CDC also recommends that everyone ages 12 and up should be boosted. Kanter the CDC added boosters to the younger age group for two reasons.
“Number one, booster doses have shown to be safe and number two booster doses greatly increase your protection with the Omicron variant,” said Kanter.
Kanter said the CDC is also now highly recommending a third dose of the vaccine for those ages five to eleven if they are moderately or severely immunosuppressed.
“These are kids who unfortunately have cancer are on chemotherapy or have other relatively rare conditions. They are now recommended to get what we call an additional dose, a third dose of vaccine,” said Kanter.
As with any vaccine Kanter recommends that you speak with your personal physician.
