President Biden announced the administration is purchasing another 500 million home COVID tests in addition to the 500 million already ordered to assist with COVID testing. Louisiana Senator and physician, Bill Cassidy said while he agrees with testing, the effort comes too late amid the Omicron surge.
“So, I’m glad they’re doing it, it’s a little bit too late, they’re asleep at the wheel. They obviously have the money and the resources they just didn’t prioritize it,” said Cassidy.
The White House also plans to distribute high-quality masks at no cost and next week a website will be launched so Americans can order the free home COVID tests. It’s not clear when those free tests will be available, but Cassidy said home tests should be readily available now.
“Congress has appropriated billions of dollars to have these tests ready to go, but if you go to a pharmacy, you cannot find COVID tests now,” said Cassidy.
Louisiana’s Senior Senator also shared with reporters that his own wife told him she’s also unable to locate a home test.
“So, we’re seeing Omicron go up but the testing for the person to do at home is not available. She has a cold, probably just a cold, but she wants to know, and she can’t test herself,” said Cassidy.
