Mobile sports wagering is set to go live in Louisiana, outside of the nine parishes that voted it down, beginning this Friday, January 28.
As of 8 am Friday, sports fans will be able to make wagers on their mobile devices. Sports bets can now be placed by anyone living in the 55 parishes where it’s legal. Voters passed legislation for mobile sports betting last fall, and on Wednesday, participating sports books received the go-ahead to open before this weekend.
Ronnie Johns, Chairman of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board, praised the collaborative efforts among agencies as the state prepares to go live.
“I’m very, very proud of Louisiana State Police Gaming Division and the Attorney General’s Office Gaming Division, ” he said. “They’ve put a tremendous amount of hard work into getting this ready to go.”
Johns says at this point, there’s nothing in the way of operators to begin to accept wagers this Friday, ahead of one of the busiest sports betting weekends of the year.
“I think we did it in a really expeditious time frame,” he added. “We’re excited about Friday morning at 8 a.m. We’re gonna go live.”
Johns is proud of the fact that Louisiana has gotten a leg up on our neighbors to the east in the competition for sports betting revenues in the region.
“They were two years ahead of us on sports betting in-house or on-property,” Johns said. “But, as of today, for the first time ever, gaming in Louisiana has taken a step ahead of Mississippi.”
