The LSU athletic department suffered a ten-million dollar deficit during the 2021 fiscal year. While revenues were down nearly $39 million, Tiger Rag.com editor Adam Hunsucker says it could have been worse.
“LSU received 29.4 million from the SEC and there was also another four-million that came from government so they were able to pad a little bit to get that number where (the deficit) was 9.6 million,” said Hunsucker.
One of the most impacted areas was a given, as LSU saw a 52 percent decrease in donations to the athletic department. Hunsucker says purse strings tightened during the pandemic, but boosters will be back.
“Contributions dropped from 41.2 million to 19.8 million, a lot of that was people batting down the hatches, because of the pandemic, but I think with a full year under our belt, when we get these numbers next year they’ll be better,” said Hunsucker.
After several layoffs, pay reductions, and other staff and cost-cutting measures during the downturn, Hunsucker sees signs that LSU is regaining its financial strength, based on the money LSU is spending on a new football staff.
