A record 31 million Americans are expected to place a bet on Sunday’s Super Bowl according to the American Gaming Association. Senior Director of Research, David Forman said after an exciting postseason more folks than ever plan to wager thanks in part to legalized sports betting.
“And they plan to be more than $7.6 billion on the game. And both of those are our all-time records,” said Forman.
That’s an increase of more than $3 billion from last year.
The Association said part of the increase is that 30 states and the District of Columbia now offer legal sports betting. Forman said ever since Louisiana sports wagering went live at casinos in November and now with online gaming, it’s more accessible to legally bet on the big game.
“Just like we’ve seen in other states that launched recently, like New York there’s going to be a lot of pent-up demand there for legal options and I think they’re going to take their legal betting options to the Super Bowl in pretty big numbers,” said Forman.
While the association doesn’t have an estimate for how much they expect Louisianans to bet on the Super Bowl, Forman said gamblers spent an average of $30 to $40 million a month in November and December, and that was before online was active.
“When you look at a similar size state, like Iowa which has online betting, people in Iowa are betting between a quarter of a billion to $300 million a month,” said Forman.
Since last year 45 million more Americans, in ten states can legally wager on the Super Bowl.
