In Terrebonne Parish 77-year-old Joseph Sias of New Orleans was killed early Sunday morning in a fatal crash involving another vehicle going in the wrong direction. Trooper Ross Brennan said Katelynn Scott of Houma was deemed impaired at the crash on US Highway 90 just west of state highway 316.
“As Scott entered the interstate going to wrong way, she struck Sias head-on causing a collision. Joseph Sias and his front passenger, they were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Mr. Sias sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene,” said Brennan
Brennan said the passenger in Sias’ vehicle sustained severe injuries and was transferred to an out-of-area hospital and Scott faces vehicular homicide charges.
“Ms. Scott, she just had minor injuries in the crash and during the investigation, troopers observed signs of impairment in her. She was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence,” said Brennan.
Brennan said charges against Scott could change if conditions worsen for the other passenger involved. He said the two victims in the crash unfortunately were not wearing seatbelts.
“Scott was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and she only received minor injuries. So just wearing a seatbelt can greatly reduce your chances of getting severely injured or even killed in a car crash,” said Brennan.
