It’s Love the Boot Week in Louisiana and Keep Louisiana Beautiful has more than 250 cleanup and beautification events this week. Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser said they have more than twice the number of volunteers this year and there’s plenty of trash for them to tackle.
“We’ve got a problem worse than ever now, two years of COVID shutdowns, a lot of things not happening out there to clean it up, so we’ve got a real dirty state and a real big project that we’ve got to clean this state up,” said Nungesser.
Volunteers are picking up trash across 52 parishes this week and Dawn Cantrell with Keep Louisiana Beautiful said they pick up tons of plastic, like bags, takeout containers, and eating utensils. She said they’ve even picked up roofing singles and tarps that weren’t disposed of properly.
“We found a satellite dish. You name it we’re finding it out here just anything and everything you can imagine,” said Cantrell.
Because litter has become an ongoing issue a task force is looking at ways to reduce trash to help beautify the state year-round.
Vice-Chair of Keep Louisiana Beautiful Courtney Hornsby said while they’ve been able to pick up plenty of trash, she wants to know why individuals continue to litter.
“We have to work on the why, we have to change mindsets so that we don’t continue this problem because it is 100% preventable,” said Hornsby.
