State police are investigating a deputy-involved shooting in Assumption Parish after sheriff’s deputies tried to make a traffic stop Sunday morning of a stolen Ford pickup. Trooper Ross Brennan said after a short pursuit the driver 26-year-old Rhett Thibodeaux of Larose, stopped the vehicle.
“With deputies stopping behind the Ford, at that point, Mr. Thibodaux place the vehicle into reverse, traveled backwards to where the deputies were at, and rammed to of the sheriff’s office units,” said Brennan.
Brennan said when Thibodeaux’s truck went into reverse and hit two of the units behind him, one of the deputies discharged their service weapon toward the truck.
“And then the Ford traveled forward and came to a stop off the roadway. Mr. Thibodeaux, he was struck by the gun fired and he was transported to a hospital in University Medical Center in New Orleans where he later died from his injuries,” said Brennan.
The Ford pickup was reported stolen out of Lafourche Parish and Brennan said evidence gathered at the scene is being processed at the state police crime lab and the investigation is ongoing.
“There were body cameras, but that’s stuff that investigators are working to collect all that evidence and be able to view it and download it,” said Brennan.
