Two of the Saints’ biggest needs heading into the NFL draft were at wide receiver and offensive tackle and they addressed both in the first round. New Orleans traded up to take receiver Chris Olave with the 11th pick. The former Ohio State standout joins former Buckeye Michael Thomas in the wide receiver room.
“I can’t wait, they told me in the process, they love the Buckeyes, I knew it would be a great fit for me playing alongside Mike Thomas, I’m glad we got that pipeline going,” said Olave.
The two-time all-first team Big Ten selection caught 35 touchdowns during his four seasons at Ohio State and averaged 15 yards a catch during his collegiate career.
With the 19th overall pick, the Saints selected Northern Iowa offensive tackle Trevor Penning. Penning is known for having a nasty side.
“There is not many offensive linemen I don’t think that is as physical as I am, just bringing nasty to the table, with some pretty good athleticism, just a combination I got of power, strength, athleticism, I think I’m going to bring that to New Orleans for sure, and get ready to compete,” said Penning.
Penning is 6-foot-7, 325 pounds, and squats 625 pounds. According to Pro Football Focus he received a 99.9 run block grade last season.
Because of the trade with the Washington Commanders to move up to number 11 to take Olave, the Saints have just three picks left in the draft. One in the second round and then one in the fifth and sixth.
But Saints Coach Dennis Allen feels great about what they were able to accomplish with their two first round picks.
