To address the ongoing baby formula shortage the US Agriculture Appropriations subcommittee will hold a hearing today. Louisiana Congresswoman Julia Letlow who was just named to House Appropriations said it will be her first hearing on the committee.
“I know it was so crucial for my two children, they were both formula-fed, it was something that had to happen, and so I can only imagine the feat that’s going through these parents’ minds as they are searching,” said Letlow.
The committee will hear from FDA Commissioner about the baby formula shortage. Letlow said it’s frightening to hear that some children are being admitted to the hospital as a result.
“We now know that the FDA knew last fall that this crisis was coming, and I want to hear directly from the commissioner why did his agency not plan accordingly and why did the federal government not take action to prepare for this months ago,” said Letlow.
The U.S. House approved two bills on Wednesday night. One of them would waive the requirements that WIC recipients are under when it comes to the types of brands and quantities of formula that they may purchase.
The lower chamber also approved legislation to give the FDA $28 million to address the formula shortage. Only 12 Republicans voted for that bill.
