For Memorial Day, the National World War II museum in New Orleans will have a number of events honoring fallen soldiers. Museum Director of Education, Dr. Maggie Hartley said on Monday they will hold a commemoration ceremony featuring a gold star spouse, that’s an individual who lost their military spouse in service.
“Being able to hear from someone who has experienced the true meaning of Memorial Day is something that really sticks with you and emphasizes the salinity of this holiday,” said Hartley.
If you’ve never visited the WWII museum, Hartley said plan to spend an entire day or two, if possible, to really take it all in. She said they have world-class exhibits that immerse you into the historic conflict.
“That takes you through the build-up to WWII. And what was America’s response before Pearl Harbor, during Pearl Harbor and how did we build up to be where we were the Arsenal of Democracy,” said Hartley.
The WWII museum is part of the nationwide Blue Star Museums program. And Hartley said that means if you are active military or a reservist admission to the museum is free right now.
“And it also includes their dependents. So, we really encourage, especially if you are a military family to check out this program and come see the museum this summer,” said Hartley.
Free admission for active military and reservists runs annually from Armed Forces Day until Labor Day.
