Governor John Bel Edwards issued a statement in response to the federal civil investigation of the Louisiana State Police. Edwards said he along with LSP Superintendent Col Lamar Davis will cooperate fully with the investigation. Kristen Clarke, US Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division said they are grateful for their cooperation.
“We are very pleased that Colonel Davis and the governor’s office have pledged cooperation. With their support we expect that we will be able to move forward with our investigation expeditiously,” said Clarke.
U.S. Attorney Ronald Gathe for the Middle District of Louisiana said the federal civil investigation is imperative to restore public confidence in law enforcement.
“The doubt of whether lawful procedures are being performed must be answered to restore the bonds between the community and police,” said Gathe.
Clarke said they will perform ride-alongs with troopers as part of the investigation and they are also seeking input from the public concerning civil rights violations. She said cooperation from LSP leaders will assist in their thorough investigation.
“The state’s cooperation will go a long way in ensuring that we’re able to move forward in a timely manner,” said Clarke.
