It appears a special session to redraw a Congressional District map will begin on Wednesday. Yesterday the 5th U-S Circuit Court of Appeals made a ruling that results in lawmakers having to follow a lower court’s order that they must redraw a U-S House map that has two Black majority districts by June 20th. Crowley Republican Representative John Stefanski says legislators have a difficult task in front of them.
“Try to pass a bill in five days, start to finish is nearly impossible,” said Stefanski.
In February, the Louisiana Legislature approved a Congressional map with one majority Black District. But a federal judge says two of the state’s six congressional districts should be majority Black because a third of the state’s population is Black. Stefanski says if lawmakers attempt to redraw a Congressional district map, he’s not sure what direction the Legislature will go.
“I’ve looked at every version you can think of, I wouldn’t say there is any front running plan,” said Stefanski.
Stefanski remains hopeful through the appeal process, the courts will determine the Congressional District map approved by lawmakers in February will meet the standards put in place by the Voting Rights Act. He says if a second majority Black district is required, Congresswoman Julia Letlow’s district could be impacted the most
“No way do I want to say that will happen, but if we are talking about the maps that were proposed, her district was targeted the most,” said Stefanski.
