The co-founder of Lift Louisiana, an advocacy group for the health and wellbeing of women, said the reversal of Roe v. Wade will heavily impact those who don’t have the means to travel to states that permit abortions. And Michelle Erenberg said state lawmakers have done nothing to assist those individuals either.
“While the state has spent decades working to restrict and ban access to abortions it has failed to create the safety net for struggling families that’s going to be needed in this time,” said Erenberg.
Erenberg said without access to safe and legal abortions in Louisiana the state will see more women and children living in poverty.
“I think we will see an increase in the number of women that will have to leave workforce and not be able to participate fully in the economy which will have rippling impacts,” said Erenberg.
She believes it will only worsen the state’s maternal mortality rate which is already third in the nation and lead to an increase in deaths among Black women who already suffer from pregnancy related complication four times greater than white women.
Despite the ruling Erenberg said Lift Louisiana will continue to fight for abortion access and support those who may be criminalized for self-managing their own abortions and those who help people seek abortions.
“And we’re going to continue to provide our community with reliable information about resources, laws and rights,” said Erenberg.
