Louisiana Congressman Mike Johnson (R-Bossier Parish) introduces legislation to allow a woman to receive child support during her pregnancy. Johnson says he’s worked with North Dakota U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer to draft the bill. He says there are a lot of expenses for expectant mothers, and financial help from the father shouldn’t wait until after the baby is born.
“We recognize, we always have, that life begins at conception and so this is really a straight forward first step towards updating our federal laws to reflect that face,” said Johnson.
Johnson & Cramer’s Unborn Child Support Act allows courts to – with the mother’s approval – mandate support payments while the baby is still in the womb. He says it’s an idea whose time has come, and it’s only fair.
“There are costs incurred in carrying a child to term and delivering that child and protecting it in the womb and so we believe that the other participant in the creation of that child should have a role in that as well if that is what the mother desires,” said Johnson.
Johnson is hopeful Democrats and the White House will get behind the legislation.
