The Governor’s Litter Abatement and Beautification Task Force has released its initial recommendations on establishing and sustaining litter prevention efforts across Louisiana. The task force was established by executive order in January and Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser says the solutions range from educating the public to promoting community litter abatement activities..
“Litter prevention, training, education, youth training, strengthening the litter laws and dump laws, improving the waste disposal and recycling,” are some of the recommendations Nungesser suggests.
Nungesser says state funding is also going into the effort. He says the state legislature set aside four million dollars and Nungesser says much of that money will be handed out as grants.
“I’ve reached out to the sheriff to see what we can do to help them help us keep the area clean, if they need tools, equipment. We also want to make sure the nonprofits have the tools they need,” Nungesser adds.
Nungesser says state agencies are also more committed than ever to cleaning up our state…
“DOTD employees pick up trash for ten minutes before they start working on a highway project. Wildlife and Fisheries is out enforcing and helping clean up the waterways. And DEQ is cleaning up major dump sites and they’re putting cameras to catch those repeat offenders,” Nungesser said.
