Attorney Ben Crump is calling on the Louisiana Legislature to hold a special session to address the state’s abortion ban law. Crump represents Nancy Davis, the Baton Rouge woman who was denied an abortion in Louisiana despite being told her baby had Acrania, a lethal condition for the fetus in which the skull does not fully form. Crump says this is the type of medical exemption in which an abortion should be allowed in Louisiana
“Governor, speaker of the house, president of the senate, come back from your August vacations, and make sure that these vague laws are actually clear,” said Crump.
The governor’s office has not said if he is considering calling a special session to clarify the law. She said she wanted this baby.
“I want you to imagine what it has been like to continue this pregnancy for another six weeks after this diagnosis,” said Davis.
Louisiana law imposes harsh penalties on doctors who perform newly-illegal abortions. Doctors can face up to 15 years in prison if convicted. Davis says the Legislature needs to act as soon as possible because of other women in similar situations who will suffer if the law isn’t changed.
“Louisiana lawmakers inflict the unspeakable pain, emotional damage, and physical risk upon this beautiful mother,” said Crump.
