State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley wants schools and parents to know that the suggested federal Title IX protections to include sexual orientation and gender identity are just suggestions. He said there’s no need to implement the proposed changes at this time.
“The feds put out guidance suggesting, many people believe to be the case, that some of the proposed changes that they are considering for Title IX are already law, and in fact, they are not law yet,” said Brumley.
Because he was questioned about the proposed changes Brumley sent a letter to school leaders clarifying that it’s not law. He gives examples of how the proposed Title IX expansions could impact schools.
“It relates to who can compete on various teams based not on biological sex, or who can go into which bathrooms not based on biological sex,” said Brumley.
If enacted, Brumley said schools that fail to comply could lose federal funding, and it could jeopardize the school lunch program for students who receive free or low-cost meals.
Brumley said because these are proposed changes at this point if you strongly feel one way or another about them, he encourages you to voice your opinion via the federal registry.
“Be part of the process, go into the public registry and offer your public comment, so that the administration will know where you and or your organization stands on these proposed changes,” said Brumley.
