After Houma police say a woman threw her infant son off a bridge Friday. She’s now being held on attempted murder charges. Lt. Travis Theriot said when officers arrived at the Liberty Street Bridge around 5 PM they learned that 30-year Asha Randolph threw her 18-month-old child off the bridge into Bayou Terrebonne.
“Moments later for whatever reason she decided to enter the waterway and pull the child from it after she’d thrown him in,” said Theriot.
Theriot said the child was taken to the hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. The incident remains under investigation and a motive has not been determined.
“I can’t imagine what the motive would be for throwing your 18-monht-old child. Not that any crime is acceptable but there is no acceptable motive for throwing a child off a bridge,” said Theriot.
According to witnesses, Theriot said shortly after Randolph threw her child over, she entered the water herself to recover the child. He said the outcome could have been much different if those eyewitnesses had not called 9-1-1.
“We’re just so happy that the child is going to be treated and recover from his injuries,” said Theriot.
In addition to attempted first-degree murder, Randolph also faces child desertion and obstruction of justice charges.
