October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Director of the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Casey Tingle said the theme of this year’s month is “See Yourself in Cyber,” and they want to drive home the point that all of us have a role to play when it comes to cybersecurity.
“This just comes down in large part to some commonsense Ideas about good password controls, multifactorial authentication in terms of having dual layers of protection in terms of logging into key systems,” said Tingle.
He said to make sure your own data is secure and backed up and that your operating system and virus protection programs are also up to date.
When it comes to social media, Tingle said you want to be careful about identifying when you’ll be out of town, because it can be an open invitation for burglars.
“Where you can see some of the crossover between your cyber presence or your presence online interacting with your everyday life and the safety of your family and property,” said Tingle.
Tingle said to be suspicious about links sent to you in emails or texts, especially from someone you don’t recognize along with attachments before you click on them. Always protect your personal identification information like your social security number, birth date, and financial account numbers. But if you are a victim of a cyberattack or crime there are things you can do.
“On our website are some instructions and you can call the Louisiana Fusion Center and their number is 1-800-434-1007,” said Tingle.
