Republican Senator Bill Cassidy said his No Surprises Act has saved 9 million Americans from receiving surprise medical bills this year alone. Cassidy authored the legislation that went into effect at the beginning of the year.
“So, it’s a huge win for patients. It’s great to see legislation clearly benefiting the lives of Americans,” said Cassidy.
Passage of the bill was a two-year effort on behalf of Cassidy and New Hampshire Democrat, Senator Maggie Hasson.
“It’s been successful. I look forward to working on more solutions and legislation to lower the cost of healthcare and these sorts of issues facing Americans,” said Cassidy.
Cassidy who’s also a physician said the law protects patients from having to pay out-of-network costs billed by their health insurance and that patients can only be required to pay in-network costs for their services.
“We need to make medical bankruptcy a thing of the past,” said Cassidy.
Cassidy said if you do receive a higher medical bill than expected, you should contact the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services at 1-800-985-3059 or the Louisiana Department of Insurance at 1-800-259-5300.
