The Louisiana Emergency Rental Assistance Program and the Louisiana Homeowner Assistance Fund will stop accepting applications Wednesday at 5 PM. Desiree Honore Thomas is Assistant Commissioner in the Division of Administration.
“We didn’t want people to continue to apply and there not be any funds left,” Thomas said
The rental assistance program began in March 2021 and Thomas said it has paid rent for about 26,000 tenants. The homeowner assistance program begin in January 2022 and has helped about 6200 homeowners to date. Thomas says both programs have helped people stay afloat through financial challenges brought about by the pandemic.
“And so people got behind with their regular obligations with their rent and mortgages. It was probably very helpful to quite a few people,” she said.
“I am incredibly proud of the success of both these programs, providing much-needed rental and mortgage assistance to thousands of renters and homeowners in Louisiana who have been impacted by COVID-19,” Governor John Bel Edwards said.
Thomas said the state will continue reviewing applications submitted by the deadline until all funds are expended. To learn more or to apply, go to lacovidhousing.com.
“If anyone thinks that they need to apply they need to do so by Wednesday at 5:00 pm,” she said.
