A surge in COVID cases is impacting nursing homes across the country. Louisiana AARP Director of Advocacy Andrew Muhl said their dashboard shows an increase in cases among residents and staff, and deaths nationwide are up 26 percent from the four-week period that ended November 20, compared to the previous four-week period.
“The concern for us is that only about 42% of our residents are vaccinated and only about 15% of our staff are up-to-date on their vaccinations and that’s here in Louisiana,” said Muhl.
Muhl said if you have a loved one in a nursing home, you should question the facility about its COVID protocols and vaccination rates.
“And are the proper vaccines being administered, are they available, and are they accessible,” said Muhl.
As we enter the winter months when cases tend to surge along with community spread and holidays Muhl urged residents and staff to get updated on their boosters.
“We’re stressing just how urgent it is for residents and staff to get protected, stay protected, and follow the guidelines that have been made available through CMS and the CDC,” said Muhl.
The state reported approximately new 4,000 COVID cases this week.
