Eleven-year-old Matthew Fortenberry was killed last night while sitting in a car in North Baton Rouge and a 17-year-old suspect is in custody. BRPD Spokesperson Sgt. L’Jean McNeely said the suspect approached the car on foot where the victim was inside with family members and held them at gunpoint.
“Someone began firing upon the 17-year-old and as he was fleeing the scene, he fired multiple shots into the vehicle. The 11-year-old was struck and transported to a hospital where he then died from his injuries,” said McNeely.
McNeely said the suspect had personal issues with one of the family members of the 11-year-old.
“He was holding them hostage pretty much a gunpoint, trying to demand that the person he had issues with come to where he was,” said McNeely.
The suspect was located less than a mile from where the shooting took place suffering from gunshot injuries. McNeely said he was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries.
“And upon his release, he was booked in parish prison with First Degree Murder, Attempted First Degree Murder, four counts, False Imprisonment, and Illegal Discharge of a Firearm,” said McNeely.
Instead of being booked into a juvenile facility, the 17-year-old was taken to EBR Parish Prison because of the murder charges.
