Officers were responding to a call of “shots fired” in the 3800 block of Industrial Drive. Johnson says the initial call came in as an armed robbery and when officers arrived the suspect began firing.
“While inside the store he shot two people that’s two fatalities. A customer and a clerk.”
The names of the victims and suspect have not been released however, media reports indicate the suspect is 50-year-old Cortell Burks who is also suspected of shooting a woman and injuring four other people in Alabama on Sunday.
“We are heartbroken by the events of yesterday but the response of our agency could not have been more in step and in tune. We really did a good job of responding and managing and mitigating it.”
