The LSU baseball team was named the fifth overall national seed for the NCAA tournament and will host a regional this weekend. The preseason favorites spent most of the season as the top team in the country before a late season fall, but they’ll still hope to make their way to Omaha for the first time since 2017. Junior first baseman Tre Morgan said he doesn’t want a repeat of last year’s regional loss.
“I remember the feelings in the dugout. I remember the tears, and I don’t want to do that again. That’s something that’s driving us, driving me. I don’t want to cry in my own dugout this year. I want to cry at Omaha because it’s over and we won.”
The Tigers lost in the Hattiesburg regional last year in coach Jay Johnson’s first season. After an offseason with the number one transfer and recruiting classes, he and his team received great expectations. Johnson said he’s proud of his squad even if the work isn’t done yet.
“We want to win a national championship. You can’t win a national championship unless you’re in the field. That’s always the first step is to be in the field. I think it’s a noteworthy accomplishment of this group to be the first to host a regional since 2019 and the first to be a national seed since 2017.”
As the fifth overall seed, LSU will host a regional and is one of eight teams who have the chance to have home field all the way to the College World Series. Fifth-year Tiger Gavin Dugas just missed LSU’s 2017 run and said he’s excited to experience postseason baseball in Baton Rouge.
“The environment here is crazy whenever it gets going. I guess the closest we got to this year for me was the Tennessee series, seeing all those fans out there and how excited and how nuts it was going. I think that’s the closest we have been but it’s not going to match what’s going to happen this weekend.”
The Tigers will open the regional against Tulane Friday
